The Portage la Prairie Planning District was formed in 2002 by
the City and Rural Municipality of Portage la Prairie. The
Portage la Prairie Planning District consists of approximately
2237 square km (864 square miles) and covers an area from the
northern boundary of Lake Manitoba to the southern boundary of
Road 54 North, East boundary of Road 18 West and to the West
boundary of Road 48 West. Population is in excess of 20,000. The
Portage la Prairie Planning District is governed by a six member
Board of Directors consisting of three representatives from each
of the City of Portage la Prairie and Rural Municipality of
Portage la Prairie. The Planning District Board adopt policy
which is implemented by staff.
The primary purpose of the Portage la Prairie Planning District
is to manage a planning program for the municipal partners. One
of the goals is to provide standardized planning requirements
through an updated development plan and zoning by-law for the
district.
The Planning District receives applications with supporting
documentation, compare application details to policy and
regulation to determine conformance and then make a decision
within policy. Where an application does not conform to policy,
staff may make recommendations to the Planning District Board or
Partner Councils.
The Planning District office is responsible for building
inspections, permits (building, demolition, plumbing, moving,
signs), planning (conditional uses, development plan amendments,
rezoning and variations) and zoning memorandums. To oversee the
following Portage la Prairie City, Rural and Planning District
By-laws: Building, Derelict Vehicles (RM), Development Plan,
Maintenance and Occupancy (City), Untidy and Unsightly Premises
(RM) and Zoning.
